El Opportunity está en el lado opuesto del planeta, en una zona plana conocida como el Meridiani Planum.

La información recogida por el Opportunity indica que hubo agua en la superficie del planeta.

Si bien es cierto que los robots son más resistentes de lo que se esperaba, después de cinco años muestran signos de deterioro.

Spirit, por ejemplo, debe ir marcha atrás todo el tiempo por un problema en una rueda, y Opportunity tiene un problema en una de sus articulaciones a raíz de un cable roto.

En algunas ocasiones, ambos han experimentado problemas con el suministro de energía debido a la acumulación de polvo en sus paneles solares.

Si dejaran de funcionar, la NASA deberá esperar un tiempo hasta lanzar su próxima misión a Marte.
