A recent study indicates that millions of people in China die prematurely in the next 25 years of lung diseases.
The study conducted by researchers from the School of Public Health at Harvard, focused on the impact of snuff and the burning of firewood and charcoal for use in cooking and heating.
The respiratory disease is a leading cause of death in China.
The researchers analyzed a period of 30 years, spanning the last five years and the next 25.
At that time an estimated 83 million Chinese will die prematurely from lung diseases.
These include cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Most of these problems are avoidable premature, since they are caused by smoking and cooking with firewood and charcoal at home.
The smoke can be reduced through taxes, health education and a ban on advertising of snuff.
At present, one in three lit cigarettes in the world is smoked in China.
About half of men in this country smoke, and the trend is an increase of women smokers.
